WHAT'S NEW FOR 2014/15: Big Powderhorn in Bessemer is celebrating the first fill winter season for the Gun Barrel Lodge. A fire destroyed the original lodge. The Gun Barrel has received high praise for its convenient and modern design features. All skier services are on the lower level with direct access to the beginner area and convenient access on and off the other slopes. The second floor offers ground level ski-in/ski-out access, two fireplaces and an outdoor gas fire pit on the patio. The third floor has a large gas fireplace, bar and restaurant with outstanding views of the slopes. In addition, they are offering one free ski day at Pine Mountain, Mont Ripley and Mt. Ashwabay to all season pass holders. First-time skiers and snowboarders eight years and older can take advantage of ³Learn It & Love It.² The program includes one 2-hour lesson, ski or snowboard rental and beginner slope lift ticket. The price is $55 for the ski package and $65 for snowboard. 1-800-501-SNOW (7669)

Instructional Programs: At our school, the classroom is a gorgeous mountainside, the instructors are a great bunch of people dedicated solely to making you look good, the homework is fun, and the worst that can happen is you'll ski better than you did before the lesson! Whatever your ability, whatever your age, you'll benefit from the expertise waiting for you at the Big Powderhorn Ski School.

Kid's Programs: Kinderschool offers quality babysitting for children 2 - 6. Kids 4-6 may participate in our "Snow Sessions" which will introduce the child to the most basic of snow skiing skills which include walking in ski boots and on skis, sidestepping, and sliding.

Racing Programs: NASTAR: Several people have commented that they wished our course was a little bit longer. . . well, now it is! It's been extended by about 40% to give all you racers more time to perfect your style or recover from a small "oops".

Ski & Snowboard Rental: In the past, many people have inquired about high performance rental gear. This year, we will have it available for you. We have also added more inventory to our more popular ski & boot sizes as well as snowboards. This should make renting the items you want just that much easier.

Lodging: Big Snow Country offers a wide range of lodging choices, from motel rooms to ski in/out chalets. They vary in amenities as well as in policies on deposits, refunds and gratuities. Be sure to check details when making reservations.

Snowmaking: One of the reasons that Big Powderhorn was built here was because of the large amounts of natural snow that falls in the Lake Superior Snow Belt. Our lowest year of snowfall (about 140 inches) is much more than most parts of the Midwest will ever see in one season. Our average snowfall (over 200 inches) is enough to make anyone who has used a snow shovel tremble in fear. Even with three of our last ten years hovering around the 300 inch mark, we realize that natural snow doesn't always come when you need it. So we have spent a lot of time and money expanding our system to provide some extra insurance. This year is no different. We are expanding coverage to portions of Alpen, Flintlock, and Tamarou that have never seen snowguns before. This will help provide access to a lot of trailside chalets if Mother Nature falls asleep on the job.
